CNN is reporting that for the fifth consecutive year, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis cases have risen in the U.S. CDC epidemiologist explains, "Combined they total 2.4 million infections that were diagnosed and reported just in last year alone." She also adds that this new number marks the most cases ever recorded in the United States.
They also explain that at one point, gonorrhea and syphilis were at an all-time low, but that has all unraveled. "The number of reported syphilis cases is climbing after being largely on the decline since 1941, and gonorrhea rates are now increasing." Factors increasing these numbers include a decline in condom use and an increase in people getting tested.
The three states with the highest cases are Alaska for chlamydia, Mississippi for gonorrhea, and Nevada for syphilis.
On a positive note, there has been a decline in herpes, and there is also a noticeable lower number of HPV complications. This is possible due to the HPV vaccine.
