In the upcoming live-action remake of 1940's classic Pinocchio, Disney has tapped in Joseph Gordon-Levitt to join the cast, playing the loveable Jiminy Cricket. He is joined by Cynthia Erivo, who will play the Blur Fairy in the feature adaptation, which is being directed by Back to the Future's Robert Zemeckis, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Zemeckis took over as director for the upcoming film after both 1917’s Sam Mendes and Paddington’s Paul King dropped out of the project, Entertainment Weekly reports. The project was first announced in 2015 and has since then been adding on to the cast.

Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, known for his role in Netflix's The Haunting of Bly Manor, will play the part of Pinocchio. Joined by Tom Hanks as Geppetto, who has been associated with the film since 2018. Keegan-Michael Key will voice the con-artist fox, Honest John and The Sopranos' Lorraine Bracco will voice a new character, Sofia the Seagull.

The project will combine both live-action and visual effects.

Pinocchio will begin production this month in the U.K. and will debut on Disney+. No release date for Pinocchio has been announced yet.
