Sean Gallup via Getty ImagesA great step in the right direction has taken place in the world of mental health services. As of July 16th, The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is now officially the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
988, the new, three-digit dialing code, is a 24/7 toll-free number that connects callers to immediate crisis care. 988 was officially launched for use across the United States on July 16th. The new number provides a shorter, easier phone number to remember for those seeking mental health crisis services. However, the previous 1-800-273-TALK (8255) number will continue to function and connect callers to the care and services they need.
According to 988lifeline.org, "When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing Lifeline network. These trained counselors will listen, understand how their problems are affecting them, provide support, and connect them to resources if necessary."
