Shawn Left The Show To Bring His Son To Kindergarten (VIDEO)
It is a right of passage for any parent… bringing your kid to their first day of Kindergarten. But… there was one problem. I told the powers that be I wouldn’t take a day off til the holidays. I’m kind of a work-a-holic, and Aimee knows that so today on the show, she kicked my butt and made me leave and send him off to school.
We captured all the moments of the drive and the drop-off, and I can’t tell you how glad I am that I was there for the moment.
Colin was our first, and we’ve been through so much. He was an emergency c-section. I remember his mom laying there with the curtain up, blissfully unaware what was happening on the other side. He peed in his own face 30 minutes after birth while they were taking his vitals and measurements. Sprouting his first teeth. Getting one of those head re-shaping helmets. Going in for surgery to retrieve an undescended “friend” that was hiding out in his stomach. His first baseball game. His first trip to Disney. Losing his first tooth. Learning how to pet the cats without annoying them. Becoming a big brother. And on and on.
And now… here we are. At the front of his first real brick and mortar school (shoutout Tyrone Thompson Elementary School!), unable to pass through the doors with him, waiving at us as he travels down the long halls of a new place. It’s surreal.
My wife lost her father when he was in his late 50’s. Too young. He always told his daughters that it always rains on the first day of school. She parked, and as soon as she did, it started to rain. 30 seconds at most, but enough to make her feel like her dad was wishing him good luck.
What a special day. Glad I was there for it. (Also, side note, parents, park better, please! There shouldn’t be room for Jesus AND all the apostles – but not another car – between you and the next car.)
