Nevada Has To Cut Lake Mead Use, But Don’t Panic (Yet)

NEVADA’S WATER CUT, SNWA SAYS NOT TO WORRY (FOR NOW) The Feds are getting involved in the Lake Mead water crisis, after many states didn’t have plans but forward to…

Lake Mead intake pipe

LAKE MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA, NEVADA – JULY 28: The old Basic Management Inc. intake pipe at Saddle Island, the first ever “straw” put into Lake Mead to bring water to Las Vegas, is shown on July 28, 2022 in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Nevada. The white “bathtub ring” on the rocks is from mineral deposits left from when the area was submerged in water. Last week, Lake Mead dropped to just 27 percent of its capacity, with the water level at its lowest since being filled in 1937 after the construction of the Hoover Dam as a result of a climate change-fueled megadrought coupled with increased water demands in the Southwestern United States. NEVADA’S WATER CUT, SNWA SAYS NOT TO WORRY (FOR NOW)

The Feds are getting involved in the Lake Mead water crisis, after many states didn’t have plans but forward to cut their water use in a meaningful way. The “Level 2A shortage” will trigger in January, and will require Arizona to lose 21% of the water it uses - a massive cut. California will lose…nothing as it negotiated with Arizona to weather this round of cuts years ago. Nevada will have to cut its allotment by 8 percent, however it’s not as bad as you’d think.

We’ve been entitled to 300,000 acre-feet a year, but due to our strict water re-use (all the water that hits the drain gets cleaned, put back in Lake Mead and re-used, unlike California), we only ended up using 242,000 acre-feet in 2021… and are expected to use even less this year with decorative grass getting yanked. Still… it’s enough to give us pause. Buy a pool cover.

GREAT BALLS (ON) FIRE

The MSG Sphere is going to be the hottest new attraction in town when it opens, but it was a little too hot yesterday. Metro spotted a fire on top of the structure yesterday. They called the Clark County Fire Department, who talked to construction staff who didn’t realize there was anything wrong. Upon inspection they spotted an electrical fire at the top of the Sphere. It was put out, no big deal, and construction continues.

OAKLAND A’S VISIT VEGAS TO TALK TO PHIL RUFFIN

The will-they/won’t-they of the Oakland Athletics coming to Las Vegas continues. According to the RJ, A’s officials were in town yesterday meeting with TI and Circus Circus owner Phil Ruffin. Phil had gone to Oakland earlier this month to discuss the Las Vegas Festival Grounds at the Strip and Sahara as a possible site for a stadium. Meanwhile, the Tropicana land is still under consideration, as is staying in Oakland. Major League Baseball seems to have no problem letting the team slide into Nevada, being willing to waive their typical relocation fee. We’ll see what happens.
