To Tip, Or Not To Tip: Which Professions Are Tipped The Worst
Las Vegas is a city built on “the tip”. Throw a cocktail waitress a chip for that drink, tip your dealer, slide the usher a $20 for a better seat. Nothing wrong with a little grease. But according to a new survey from PlayUSA.com, it looks like our tippin’ is slippin’.
Over 1,000 Americans were surveyed and it looks like the older you are, the more likely you are to “tip well”.
Top Tippers By Generation
- Baby Boomers – 95%
- Gen X – 84%
- Millennials – 84%
- Gen Z – 74%
That doesn’t come as too much of a shock, considering the older you are the more likely you are to have wealth. However once you get into the numbers there are some eye-raising stats.
Only 83% say they “always” tip at a sit-down restaurant. That’s strikingly low considering how much the wait staff is paid. If there’s no table service (pick it up at the counter), 49% say nope, no tip. Tipping is supposedly based on the customer service you get, and 68% say they tip based on the service received. 32% say they’re tipping what they are tipping, regardless of service.
Obviously, there are some professions that tend to get the tips the most. Waiters and waitresses being at the top of the food chain. While there is a lot of guidance about who you should be tipping in your life and how much, not everyone gets a cut.
Best To Worst Tipped Workers
- Restaurant with Table Service – 98%
- Food Delivery Workers – 76%
- Hairstylist – 74%
- Rideshare Driver – 54%
- Taxi/Shuttle Driver – 47%
- Massage/Beauty/Facial Appointment – 39%
- Coffee Shop – 39%
- Hotel Housekeeping – 38%
- Movers – 34%
- Nail Tech – 32%
- Takeout from a Restaurant – 31%
- Food Truck – 29%
- Hotel Bellhop – 26%
- Restaurant with No Table Service – 25%
- Furniture Delivery Worker – 23%
- Home Services/Repair Workers – 11%
Whoa! Furniture delivery in particular. You try lugging that couch up a flight of stairs!
The coffee shop category depends a lot on which coffee shop. If it is a part of a large chain, only 27% will tip for their drink, versus 49% at a local coffee shop.
The good thing is the pandemic has many of us tipping more, with 26% saying they tip a higher amount than usual and 19% saying they tip more types of service workers than usual.
Here’s a tip: tip your dealer if you’re playing Blackjack. They’ve been called every name in the book for drawing cards they have no control over. A little good karma can go a long way.

Let’s be honest, folks. Times are tough. Inflation is horrible. And my money seems to be disappearing left and right.
The worst part… pretty much everything has went up in price. Everything. Prices are even higher now than they were even just six to eight months ago. My wallet is feeling the pain. And unless you are literally rollin’ in the dough, your wallet is likely feeling it as well.
Luckily, there are ways to combat these high prices and save some money, especially when it comes to grocery shopping! You don’t have to become an extreme couponer either. I mean, if extreme couponing interests you, by all means! It works true magic, and I love watching the videos of the checkouts breaking down over the amount of money being knocked off. I find it… soothing. I’m weird.
