Star Report

Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt) in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, from Nintendo and Illumination.

Another trailer for the Super Mario Brothers movie hit the internet yesterday (November 30). One thing that many seemed to agree on: Chris Pratt’s Mario sounds just like Chris Pratt. According to many, he didn’t make enough effort to sound like the Mario character. The supporting cast: Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Jack Black as Bowser and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad all seemed to be better received. Pratt was first dunked on when the cast was announced September 2021. Now, with two trailers out and a good idea of what Pratt’s Mario is going to sound like for the highly-anticipated movie, fans of the beloved video game franchise aired out their grievances on Twitter.

One person wrote, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie might be the first instance where instead of one character/actor carrying the film, it will be literally EVERYONE ELSE carrying Chris Pratt.” While another said, “Chris Pratt being criticized for using his normal voice for mario and Charlie Day being praised for using his normal voice for luigi is the best outcome actually.” Another person said, “It’s so annoying because I love literally everything about this trailer except for Chris Pratt’s voice.”

One person tweeted, “chris pratt really got into that voice booth and voiced himself like not a lick of effort.” One person called out Pratt’s attempt at Mario’s iconic “Wahoo!” writing, “we’ve mocked chris pratt a ton but i have to say the incredibly meek and pathetic sounding ‘wahoo’ he did during the kart sequence had me in tears it sucked so bad.” Another wrote, “Jack Black sounds like he auditioned and won the part. Chris Pratt sounds like he was hired before the script was written.” One person hilariously said, “i don’t know how to explain it but it sounds like chris pratt recorded the whole movie sitting down.”
