Lazy WalletHub Study Once Again Marks Las Vegas “Most Sinful”
There are three things you cannot avoid: death, taxes, and a stupid WalletHub survey marking Las Vegas as “The Most Sinful City In America”! We get it. Har har. Sin City. Hysterical.
They did it in 2021. They did it in 2020. 2019? yep. Oh yeah, 2018, you bet. 2017. 2016. The list goes on and on. Las Vegas, most sinful. Every. Single. Time.
We are over it.
WalletHub are in the business of making silly studies that get clicks. Hey, you’re here right. But here’s how they come up with the seven categories they use to rank cities.
- Anger & Hatred: How many violent crimes are there? Sex offenders per capita. Deaths due to firearms and more…
- Jealousy: Thefts per 1,000 residents, ID theft and fraud complaints per capita…
- Excesses & Vices: Share of Obese adults, fast food joints per capita, DUI fatalities per capita, etc…
- Greed: Casinos per capita, charitable donations as share of income, adults with gambling disorders
- Lust: Adult entertainment per capita, erotic events per capita, Google searches for “XXX entertainment”, Google searches for “Tinder”, teen birth rate
- Vanity: Tanning salons per capita, Google searches for “Top 5 plastic surgeries”
- Laziness: Share of adults not exercising, average hours worked, volunteer rate, high school dropout rate, etc.
OK. We’ve laid out the ground rules. Now lets get into it… and here’s the rub: Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Henderson are ranked separately. That’s our clue that Las Vegas might not be “Las Vegas” after all.
- 1. Las Vegas, NV – Total Score 59.93
- 19. North Las Vegas, NV – Total Score 47.12
- 68. Henderson, NV – Total Score 39.98
All of them rank above Tempe, Arizona at number 71, home to one of the biggest party schools in America. We call crap.
Why Las Vegas is wrongfully accused
Enough, WalletHub. You do it every year and we are over it. Out of curiosity, are you counting the Las Vegas Strip? That’s not Las Vegas. That’s the unincorporated city of Paradise. Las Vegas looks like this:
If you’re counting the place with the massive multi-billion dollar casinos, you’ve got the wrong place.
Greed? Casinos, we’ve got plenty, so we understand why Las Vegas ranked so high here. But Las Vegas is 36th in charitable giving above St. Louis, Chicago and more… just because we like to play Bingo on a Saturday night does not make us “greedy” or “sinful”.
Lust? We get back to the strip club talk, and the question is are you talking about Las Vegas or the tourist corridor that is Paradise? That’s like saying Orlando has the most employed mice. You know who has the most strip clubs per capita? Portland, Oregon. You know who has more than Las Vegas? Houston. As a matter of fact, Las Vegas ranks 7th in strip clubs, and much of that is to serve the tourist community and not the locals.
Vanity? We rank 5th. You rate tanning salons and searches for plastic surgeons as the way to come up to this number. As far as tanning salons go, we have some but not nearly as much as some cities in the northeast. In Las Vegas, we get plenty of sun. Plastic surgeons? Yeah, we have some of the best in the world here. But people come from all over the world to be here for it. Google searches aren’t the correct metric for vanity. Try ACTUAL BOOB JOBS. Salt Lake City leads the way there! Yeah, no kidding!
Laziness?! LAZINESS? Your own damn “fattest cities” list has us at 65th. Oh are our graduation rates low? It’s 13 points higher than the Bronx. Cmon.
Enough.
The fact of the matter is Las Vegas isn’t #1 in any category, the methodology is bunk, and they are confusing the city with the Strip. Fact of the matter is we aren’t perfect (yeah, our murder rate is 6th, but less than half per capital than St. Louis)… but there are plenty of more sinful, and certainly more boring places to be. Google searches are not indicators of sin. We know we’re in the top 10… but every year? Every year?! Talk about laziness. Give it to St. Louis. ONCE.
Hmm. This probably isn’t helping the “Anger & Hatred” score, is it?
