Nevada State Board Might Push High School Start Times, And They Should
The Nevada State Board of Education has begun exploring the pros and cons of a potential change that would impact hundreds of high schools in the state of Nevada. During a Board meeting in Las Vegas on Thursday, December 15th, the possibility of pushing back day-to-day start times for high schools was up for discussion among board members.
According to News 3, while Board members who chose to engage on the topic and speak their opinion expressed support for the potential adjustment, no action was taken to enforce the later start times. But action on this possible change could be a very beneficial move for Nevada teens…
While there are certainly pros and cons to a later start time, it’s no secret that teenagers need more sleep than adults. And with most Nevada high schools starting at 7:00 a.m., Nevada teenagers simply don’t get enough shut-eye due to late nights spent studying and early mornings rushing to get dressed and make it to school on time. This lack of sleep can lead to poor performance in school, lower test scores, decreased creativity, and a general feeling of unhappiness and exhaustion. Allowing our students more time to catch up on their zzz’s can help them succeed both academically and emotionally.
Starting school later means that students will have more time in the morning to wake up naturally without having to set an alarm clock or rush out of bed. With this extra time, they can focus on getting ready for their day without feeling rushed or stressed. This can lead to increased productivity throughout the day as well as improved mental clarity and focus during class. It also gives students more time for breakfast before heading off to school… which we all know is the most important meal of the day!
Pushing back start times has many potential benefits for students in Nevada – from improved academic performance and better mental clarity during class, to additional opportunities for extracurricular activities after school hours are over. While nothing has been finalized yet, and there are certainly many details that would need to be worked out with a revised start schedule, it looks like there might be some good news coming to Nevada’s high schoolers and their families soon.
