Gym Shuts Out New Members On Jan. 1
Fitness company Equinox recently launched a day-long campaign to lock out newcomers from signing up for membership. The message was loud and clear – hitting the gym is not a New Year’s resolution that will last. Those looking to start 2023 off with a bang were met with a message to stop them in their tracks. Equinox called the month of January a “fantasy delivered to your door in a pastel-colored box,” but some didn’t find it so funny.
The campaign was met with immediate backlash from many people who felt that Equinox was shaming those who wanted to make positive changes in their lives. Many argued that if anything, more people should be encouraged and supported in their efforts toward better health, rather than shamed or mocked. Others felt that the campaign was mean-spirited, only targeting those who couldn’t afford expensive gym memberships in the first place.
Despite the negative response, Equinox has stood by its controversial campaign, claiming it is simply trying to be realistic about how most people approach New Year’s resolutions—that is, they make them with enthusiasm on January 1st only for them to fade away by February 1st. While this may be true for some people, there are also plenty of dedicated individuals who stick with their resolutions all year long and make real progress towards their goals.
Equinox created an interesting concept behind its campaign but unfortunately executed it poorly. Despite being an expensive membership service catering mostly to wealthy customers, taking cheap shots at those trying to make positive changes in their lives is not something we can support here at [brand].
