Aimee’s Radio Story Is…Different
Happy National DJ Day to all of my DJ friends! On this day, we celebrate the talents of all the disc jockeys. The ones playing ‘Shut Up And Dance’ for the 10,000th time at a wedding, to the radio personalities (like myself) that get you through the morning drive and first sips of coffee!

The story of how I became a DJ/Radio Personality is a fun story about taking a chance and just being yourself. Picture this: I am 29 years old. I am bartending at T-Bones Chop House & Lounge making great money, and loving my job, but knowing that I didn’t want to do it forever.
But, what was I going to do if I wasn’t working in a restaurant?
A regular of ours happens to be a radio veteran in town. One of my favorite people. He would come in he would normally order the same thing and on slow nights when I was able to chat, we would talk about pop culture and music and life. In January 2015 he said that he and his partner had parted ways and he was going to be going to another station. I was so intrigued by how that process went. I asked so many questions (that looking back, were so innocent because I had no idea how this whole morning show went). I asked if he was going to have a partner. If it was going to be a man or woman. How does the interview process go? His career was so interesting and fun to me.
He simply said in that conversation “I think you would be really good at radio.”
When you are a bartender people say you would be good at a lot of things because you’re the one pouring their cocktails. Some have said I would have been good at medical sales, or real estate. I won’t lie… I got excited but also knew it could possibly be one of those things.
But every time we saw each other we would talk more about it after a few airchecks and interviews I quit my bartending job and moved to radio. It was almost 6 months to the day from that casual conversation at the bar to the day I cracked the mic for the first time. It’s been 8 years and I still have pinch-me moments.
I haven’t looked back.
The past 8 years have been filled with many highs and even some lows. I have been blessed to cross many things off my bucket list. Things I never would have imagined in my wildest dreams I would have gotten the chance to do. I have given away a truck, trips to the Bahamas, concert and show tickets, and even gave a couple the gift of becoming parents when we gave away in vitro. Radio is the most amazing job out there. You gotta do what you love and when you love what you do are you even working?
Happy National DJ Day!
