Las Vegas Needs A New Airport – Here’s Where It Will Go
It was a massive year for Harry Reid International Airport, and now the calls for a new major airport for the Las Vegas Valley to relieve LAS are getting louder. But where would you put it? Turns out officials already know.
Officials announced Monday that Reid International served 52.6 million passengers over the course of 2022. That’s not only a great number, it’s better than ever!
On it’s face, the news that Reid has rebounded post-COVID is good, right? We’ve got people coming back, spending plenty of money, that’s great news! But what happens when Reid hits it’s breaking point? What happens when the act of flying to Las Vegas becomes so painful that people avoid coming at all? That’s the worry of the county, and why they’ve been planning for a second “reliever” airport to take some of the pressure off the former McCarran.
Where do you put a new Las Vegas airport?
So where does it go? Will Summerlin Parkway become a runway? No. Will the vacant land south of Mountain’s Edge become a bustling new airport? No, but you’re getting warmer. Think south. Way south.
Yes, you are looking at the site of the second Las Vegas area airport. The Clark County Department of Aviation has had this plot of land in their sights for several years now. Thousands of acres of land just east of Interstate 15 between Primm and Jean. Sure, it’s over 20 miles south of Las Vegas… but Denver’s International Airport, built in 1995, was 25 driving miles from Downtown Denver when it opened, and now the city has expanded to it.
That might be a sign of where officials believe the valley will expand in the years to come.
But how the heck would people get from the new Las Vegas airport to…Las Vegas?!
Road and…rail. Obviously the airport would be right along Interstate 15 so that’s a natural explanation. But the proposed Brightline West rail system would roll right past the proposed new airport and would whisk visitors away to their final destination. Heck, it’s on the map.
So in at least 15 years, if a friend asks if you’ll pick them up from the airport, be sure to ask which airport before you agree to anything.
