Las Vegas Named Least Safe City For Online Dating, According To Study
Ah, the lure of Las Vegas. Sin City, The Entertainment Capital of the World — it’s a place where anything goes and no one asks questions. Well, that may be true in certain aspects of life in the city, but it definitely doesn’t apply to online dating. According to a recent study on safety and security in various cities when it comes to online dating, Las Vegas was named the least safe city of them all. Yikes! Let’s dive into why this is so important and what we can do to make sure our experience with online dating is safe and secure.
According to News 3, the study was conducted by BestVPN.org, who “analyzed identity theft reports, fraud cases, the number of registered sex offenders, violent crime rates, and sexually transmitted diseases to determine the safest cities for online dating.”
The results? Far from what we wanted to hear. News 3 reports that Federal Trade Commission (FTC) data revealed Las Vegas had 383 reports of identity theft, 1,141 reports of fraud, 1,287 STD cases, 1,763 violent crimes, and 684 registered sex offenders per 100,000 residents. These figures are frightening… And ultimately resulted in Las Vegas being ranked as the least safe city for online dating out of the more than 200 metropolitan cities evaluated.
So what can you do if you pursue online dating and you live in or around Las Vegas?
First off, don’t let this news discourage you from finding love! Instead, be proactive and take steps to protect yourself while using dating apps/websites. Consider the tips below:
- Get to know someone before meeting them in person – take your time getting to know someone before agreeing to meet up with them face-to-face
- Tell someone where you are going – let a friend or family member know when/where you are meeting up with someone new
- Meet in public places – always choose busy public spaces like coffee shops or parks when meeting up with an online date; never go alone to their home or yours
- Trust your instincts – if something doesn’t feel right about a situation or person that you’re interacting with online (or otherwise), trust your gut and move on!
