Good News, Lake Mead! Best Snowpack In Over A Decade
So often when you hear about Lake Mead and the Colorado River, you hear of the dire straights in the American southwest. Water levels dropping at historic rates, and a very bleak forecast for how tenable living in Southern Nevada may be. This year scarcity has been replaced by abundance. Snowpack levels in the Upper Colorado River Basin are far better than previous years.
According to measurements along the starved Colorado River, snowpack measurements as of April 3rd are at 147.38% above the 30 year average for the date. This is the highest amount over the average over at least the last decade.
Over the last two years, the snowpack in the Upper Colorado River Basin was at 82% of average. The “high water mark” of the last decade was in 2019 at 131% over the 30 year average. Meanwhile 2015 boasted the worst reading for this date at only 57% of the 30 year average.
While reaching an all-time peak this year is welcomed news, it is not nearly enough to solve the river’s issues. Researchers believe that the region would need to string several years of measurements that far exceed expectations, along with water conservation, to get a handle on the parched waterway.
While this is good news for Lake Mead, we have a long way to go
The water at Lake Mead is measured at 1047 feet as of February 28th, close to the all time low set in July 2022 of 1040 feet. This falls far short of the all-time high set in July 1983, where the water measured at 1225 feet. The lake was so high, overflow poured into spillways. What we would give for those days again.
It’s worth noting, Southern Nevada has done an incredible job when it comes to water conservation. Nearly every drop that ends up in a drain is cleaned, returned to the lake and eventually back to our taps. Water use has dropped 48% per capita in the last several years, despite adding three-quarters of a million in population.
