Plastic Bags No Longer Free At These Southern Nevada Stores
If you live in Southern Nevada and you don’t already use reusable bags, now is the time to start. Plastic bags will no longer be free at certain stores located in the southern portion of the state. Shoppers are left with two options: Prepare your reusable bags for the trip, or prepare to pay for the plastics.
According to KTNV News 13, both Petco and Sprouts are now charging 10 cents per plastic bag. Historically, plastic bags have been free to shoppers at most stores across the nation. But the shift to reduce the unnecessary amount of plastic going into the world has caused some stores to adopt these new practices.
Currently, most grocery stores located in California and Oregon already charge for their plastic bags. Slowly but surely, the required payment for plastic bags is a trend spreading across the nation. For Southern Nevada and the Las Vegas area, it’s a fairly new concept, but hopefully one that Southern Nevadans will come around to.
While Petco and Sprouts are some of the first stores in the area to adopt the 10-cents-per-bag required payment, other stores are sure to follow suit as we as a nation continue to (fingers crossed) lessen our environmental footprint by utilizing more sustainable and reusable products for our day-to-day endeavors.
Eventually, plastic bags at stores will be a thing of the past, so go ahead and start building the healthy habit of throwing your reusable bags of varying shapes and sizes in the trunk of your car. In the long run, it will ultimately save you money and help our planet be the happiest, healthiest version of itself it can be.

5 Of the Riskiest Foods Linked to Recalls
A new Consumer Reports study has ranked the riskiest foods. They analyzed data from the CDC, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Department of Agriculture between 2017 and 2022. Their researchers focused on “widely consumed foods” that had recalls over a specific duration of time.
According to Consumers Reports, the CDC estimates that 48 million people each year fall ill from salmonella, listeria, E. coli, or other bacteria or viruses in food. They said most recover on their own after a few days. But about 130,000 people are hospitalized and 3,000 die from foodborne illnesses yearly.
Some of the foods that are ranked at the top of the list include bagged salads, poultry products, and deli meats. The top five are leafy greens, deli cheese and meat, ground beef, onions, and poultry. Bagged salads and other leafy greens ranked number one on the list. They found 50 different recalls linked to them since 2017. Also, it has the most caused deaths. Last on the list at number ten is flour. Unlike leafy greens, flour has had zero total deaths.
“We aren’t saying people need to avoid these foods entirely,” says Brian Ronholm, director of food policy at CR, who led the analysis. “After all, these foods are all usually safe, and many of them are in fact important parts of a healthy diet.” Ronholm continued to say in Consumers Report that the list underscores the “importance of following best food safety practices with all of your foods, including knowing how to track, and respond, to food recalls when they happen.” Read the entire list, and learn how you can reduce your risk at Consumer Reports.
