Expect Delayed Flights This Summer… Here’s Why
It’s almost summer, and that means it’s almost time for summer vacations! Families across the nation are currently planning the details of their summer excursions – reserving hotel rooms, booking adventures, and, of course, purchasing flights. But if you’re one of those families buying plane tickets to fly in the near future, expect delayed flights to and from your destination this summer.
While airlines have had their various issues both during and following the COVID-19 pandemic, the cause of these projected delays is actually not airline related at all. It comes down to the airports. Nearly all the airports, across the entire United States.
The root of the upcoming flight delays comes down to one simple fact – There is currently a major shortage in air traffic controllers. And for those living in Las Vegas, Harry Reid International Airport is no exception to this issue.
According to KTNV, “Tony Borgert, a Las Vegas controller for the FAA and the leader of the local National Air Traffic Controllers Association, said the lack of talent is a problem all over the country. In fact, there are about 1,000 fewer air traffic controllers nationwide this year when compared to a decade ago, according to the FAA.”
Fortunately, there is some good news. Air traffic controller positions pay very well once an individual completes all of the required training. And with nearly 1,000 open positions needing to be filled nationwide, this current shortage issue could result in hundreds of individuals starting a new career path and making excellent money in the long run. Once the training process is completed, an air traffic controller can start out making around $120,000.
