City Of Las Vegas To ‘Vegas Vic’: “You’re Not Bright”
You know, it hasn’t been an easy go for Vegas Vic. Back in 1951, the neon cowboy was the cock of the walk on Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas. Standing proud, bright as can be, welcoming people to the city with a wave and a smile with a cigarette in his mouth. Then in 1980, he met his true love Vegas Vickie. Could anything get any better?
Well, no it turns out. It could get a lot worse.
Vic hasn’t seen able to see the sun since 1995 when Viva Vision was built over him. His girlfriend left him and moved into a stunning new house. Ol’ Vegas Vic doesn’t talk anymore, doesn’t move anymore, people think his smoking is gross and frankly he is reached a new level of darkness on the side of a souvenir shop.
Well, that darkness has reached a new low.
Why is Vegas Vic in trouble with the law?
The City Of Las Vegas has stepped in to deal with the depressed dude. Turns out there is a “municipal sign code” in the downtown casino area that requires all illuminated signs to actually illuminate from an hour before sunset to an hour after sunrise.
“We’ve received multiple comments about the Vegas Vic sign not being illuminated. Our Code Enforcement team responded and found the sign to be in violation of our municipal sign code. A correction notice was issued to the owner on April 24,” @CityOfLasVegas tweeted on Tuesday.
This sign is located in the Downtown Casino Overlay District. It must be fully illuminated from at least one hour before dusk until one hour after dawn.

Now the sign’s owners, Pioneer Hotel Inc., have to get Vic glowing again… and depending on how much disrepair he is in it could be as simple as turning the lights on, or a full overhaul of the world famous sign.
If they can’t make Vegas Vic bright again, we say it’s time for Circa owner Derek Stevens to cross the street, throw his arm around him, buy him a drink. Show him the view from the Legacy Club and show him there’s a reason to live – brightly.
