Change Up! Oakland A’s Move Las Vegas Stadium To Tropicana
Talk about a wild pitch. After years of deliberation, the Oakland A’s finally settled on a plot of land. The site of the former Wild Wild West was. But, this is the Athletics so chaos reigns. The plan has changed and now the team plans on building their yet-to-be-funded stadium where the Tropicana Las Vegas Hotel & Casino resides.
Let us explain.
Why are the Oakland A’s moving the site of their Las Vegas stadium!?
It almost hurts your brain when you think about all of the moving pieces. The A’s were talking about several different sites through the valley over two years of flirting with the valley (and using us as a pawn in their quest for a new Oakland stadium). When the Oakland plan seemed untenable, things got more serious. Las Vegas Festival Grounds at Las Vegas Boulevard and Sahara were in the team’s sights. Everyone assumed the Rio would make a great home for the team. The Tropicana location was bandied about for a bit.
When the team announced nearly 50 acres of the former Wild Wild West property at Tropicana and Dean Martin was the final choice, people were a bit surprised. Their “binding agreement” to buy the land for an unknown amount of money (estimated to be around $150,000,000) led to this ask from the team: give us $500,000,000 in public funds to help us build it. That led to many locals raising their eyebrows. The brows nearly went off people’s heads when they found out that the Rio offered up 22 acres of land for $1 and the team refused. A deal to get money in Carson City seems to be dragging… so the team re-assessed and started texting their exes.
OK, now what?!
Well, here we are. The Tropicana could be leveled with new hotels being built around the ballpark. Red Rock Resorts, parent company of Station Casinos and owner of the Wild Wild West land, will likely get a sweet penalty fee for the A’s backing out of the deal. Now the A’s are only asking for $350,000,000 in public funds for the Tropicana project which is sure to be a traffic disaster.
