Check Out The Film Studios That May Be Coming To Las Vegas
If you haven’t noticed lately, word has gotten out that Nevada is willing to give billion dollar businesses free money! Hey, don’t act like you wouldn’t line up too. While the Oakland Athletics are pounding the pavement attempting to get their hand out, Hollywood has driven up Interstate 15 looking for their own. While the Athletics deal seems like error after error, this might be more of a home run.
Senate Bill 496 is seeking to get $190,000,000 in yearly tax credits for two decades, which could encourage some major investment into the state, and in particular, Southern Nevada.
Actor and producer Mark Wahlberg has been very clear about his intentions to make Las Vegas “Hollywood 2.0” since moving to the valley last year. He was in Carson City to discuss the bill this week. Earlier this year Wahlberg filmed scenes for the upcoming movie The Family Plan. The production was his first in the valley and he says he saw the potential of the film industry in the area.
Now it goes to the Nevada Legislature for a vote. Similar measures help bring a slew of productions to areas around North America, including Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and Massachusetts. The latter has seen a flood of new productions come to the area including movies like Free Guy, Paul Blart: Mall Cop, and Shutter Island among several dozen others. There is no doubt where there are tax credits, the productions will follow.
Why does Las Vegas need film studios?
Las Vegas already has a lot of productions throughout the city, and that isn’t likely to change any time soon. But the tax credits are what will drive the development of two movie studios. One would be a joint venture between Sony Pictures and the Howard Hughes Corporation (Summerlin’s corporate daddy). That project would be built near RC Willey on the 215 Beltway. The other project wouldn’t be much further away, near Ikea at 215 and Durango. Large soundstages that are ready and ripe for filming movies, television shows and the like.
Obviously a lot of hands are out and looking for money right now in Carson City… but who knows. The next (several) blockbuster movies could be coming from Southern Nevada sooner than you might think.
