Why Oswald The Lucky Rabbit Is The Best Story In Disney History
Who doesn’t love a comeback story? When you walk into Disney California Adventure, you probably don’t think much of Oswald’s gas station to the left. But Oswald The Lucky Rabbit is at the start of the park for a reason. Without him, and what happened to him, we may not have the Disney you see today.
The year was 1927. A young Walt Disney just created his first animated character. Oswald The Lucky Rabbit was created by Walt and his cohort Ub Iwerks and went on to star in several productions over the next decade. However, Walt and Ub didn’t have much time at the helm of the Oswald ship. A bad business deal saw Walt and Ub on the outside looking in by 1928, and gone was Walt’s first “baby”.
Walt Disney Studio needed to rinse that bad taste from their mouths and create a new character. That character would go on to be one of the best known trademarks in the world. Mickey Mouse was his name, and the rest is history.
Walt Disney and his empire grew and grew, but Oswald was always out of the company’s control. That is, of course, until 2006. Disney’s ABC television network were about to let go of Monday Night Football. Meanwhile, NBC was about to launch Sunday Night Football the following season. They wanted illustrious play by play man Al Michaels on the call, but ABC had his contract. In a brilliant move, Disney realized Oswald was now under the corporate ownership of NBC Universal. So… they made a simple business deal.
We’ll give you Al Michaels if you give us Oswald The Lucky Rabbit. It worked, and now Oswald is back at his rightful home!
Makes you wonder what would have happened if Walt never lost Oswald…
