‘F’ For The A’s: Opponents Eviscerate Athletics Stadium Deal
Well it turns out not everyone is a massive fan of handing a multi-billionaire $380 million dollars in public funding. The president of the Oakland Athletics was in the gallery in Carson City to watch the Nevada Legislature’s special session to attempt to get the massive public funding and sweetheart tax deal set for a new baseball stadium, likely at the Tropicana site. Well, it wasn’t the warm reception he probably wanted.
Lawmakers have shown some serious trepidation as their constituents have been pretty vocal in their disapproval of a deal for a stadium without serious renderings, with unanswered questions and, of course, with a major company asking for a handout. NBC Sports Bay Area host Brodie Brazil (who has been an outstanding follow during these negotiations) made a compilation of some of those opposing the deal, and it’s pretty damning.
One of the vocal opponents is a former member of the Oakland Athletics front office. Steve Pastorino has worked with a lot of sports organizations, including the A’s for 5 years, and it turns out he wasn’t much of a fan of A’s president Dave Kaval, the team’s billionaire owner John Fisher, and the deal itself.
“The walking, talking bobblehead known as Dave Kaval can’t even answer Senator Donate’s questions (to pay the live entertainment tax on games) … You cannot trust Dave Kaval.” Woof. He went on to point out at the laughable $1 million in community support to build baseball fields in town, given the costs associated with that. Needless to say, he did not enjoy his time working for the A’s.
He was one of several who took to the podium to point out the bad math and optics of the deal.
Not everyone hates the Athletics stadium deal
Turns out, there are some people who are in support. Many of them would benefit from the building of the stadium. Union worker organizations are in favor. Obviously, they would be building the stadium so of course they would be. MGM Resorts came out in favor of the bill. They have nearly every property that borders the Tropicana. They stand to benefit in room sales and pre- and post-game gaming.
Opposition to the bill are not opposed to baseball. Many made it clear, they are sports fans. But they aren’t a fan of throwing money at a losing organization, when the Knights are at the cusp of winning the Stanley Cup in a privately financed arena.
It’s an 0-2 count, and the batter is frozen at the plate.
