Maui Wildfire Relief: Help Hawaii Victims
Our hearts continue to break as we receive updates on the Hawaiian wildfires that have engulfed Lahaina, Pulehu, Upcountry Maui and portions of the Big Island. Many communities have been affected by this devastation with lost loved ones, entire neighborhoods annihilated and many citizens with no where to go.
MauiCounty.gov posted an update on @CountyOfMaui on X (formerly Twitter) that as of 2:16 p.m. on August 10, the Lahaina fire was “80 percent contained.” Many Hawaiian fire departments are working relentlessly to extinguish the fire. The X account @CountyOfMaui states that, “55 fatalities confirmed amid active Lahaina fire.” To give perspective, the United States Consensus Bureau reports that as of April 1, 2020, 12,702 residents live in the area. As a community far and wide, we send condolences to each their families and friends during this painstaking time.
Lahaina, located in Maui County, is a major fishing hotspot, trade town and popular destination for many tourists. The area is also know for it’s breathtaking beach views, local art and authentic cuisines. Achingly, the town is in ruins with a majority of the area takeover by wildfire. Search and rescue teams are actively navigating through the flames to find missing individuals. Roads and highways have been closed off to protect the safety of others. Airports are over crowded with many island locals trying to evacuate to nearby cities. First responders and volunteers are working around the clock to help.
As Las Vegas has been coined as the “ninth island” we hope that our brothers and sisters find safety.
