Maui Strong Fundraiser Sunday In Downtown Las Vegas
The utter devastation on the island of Maui is difficult to put into words. Thousands of acres charred. Over a thousand unaccounted for. 115 confirmed dead and untold number of lives affected forever in the historic community of Lahaina. Las Vegas is known as the “9th Island” for our massive Hawaiian population. So it goes without saying that the community would want to step up to help.
This Sunday, August 27th from 3pm-9pm, the Downtown Container Park in Downtown Las Vegas is hosting “Maui Strong”. The event will feature Hawaiian performers, local vendors and artists, delicious Hawaiian bites and drinks for various food trucks and even Zumba and Hula fitness.
It is totally free to attend but financial donations are encouraged. A portion of vendor proceeds will go to the Maui Fire Relief Fund, the Salvation Army and Maui Food Bank.
Las Vegas can help with this fundraiser, but the need for direct help in Maui is limited
As you can expect, Maui is in a state of emergency. The world has been throwing donations towards the island and while it is appreciated, it has inundated the relief efforts. While donations of cash are encouraged, other items are not suggested to send unless you have a specific person you are sending to.
Obviously donations are meant to help, not hurt. Clothing sent direct to Maui is not needed at the moment, however Salvation Army will be accepting them at Sunday’s event. Shelters do not need direct donations and they should be sent to the appropriate recovery efforts instead.
According to state officials and Hawaii News Now, there is a need for non-perishable food, fresh water, wheelchairs, portable charging and many other items. But if you do not have someone on the island that you are directly sending to, consider sending to partners on Oahu.
The need is incredible, and you can help. Bring the ohana to Downtown Container Park this Sunday to gather and give back.
