Danke Schoen! Wayne Newton To Continue Flamingo Residency
If there was a Mount Rushmore of Las Vegas performers, there is a strong argument to be made for Wayne Newton. The “Danke Schoen” singer has been performing in town since 1959 and that isn’t coming to an end any time soon.
Mr. Las Vegas announced in an interview with Today that his “Up Close And Personal” residency at Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel & Casino has been extended. He’s announced new dates going into mid-2024 that will have the spry 81 year old entertaining thousands more. He’s also racking up several more shows to add to his list that Today estimates is somewhere around 50,000 performances.
How did Las Vegas’ love affair with Wayne Newton begin?
It’s almost crazy to think that a 15 year old* was wowing audiences in Las Vegas, but it’s true. According to his interview with the AZ Republic, he and his brother were discovered by an agent and given an opportunity to audition in Las Vegas. Depending on which interview you read, he either started at 15 (1957), in 1958 or 1959. Needless to say it’s been long enough that it doesn’t matter.
Like many residencies since, that short two week contract turned into a five year run at the Fremont Casino.
Since then, Wayne has appeared absolutely everywhere as the unflinching smiling face of Las Vegas. From the NFL Draft to Vegas Vacation, 7th Heaven to – of course – Las Vegas, Wayne has become the closest thing to a mascot Las Vegas could ever get. And who could ask for more of Las Vegas’ adopted son?!
