The Culinary Union May Strike At These Las Vegas Properties
There has been a lot of talk about the Culinary Local 226 and their latest victories. Caesars, MGM, Wynn. They all signed on the dotted line, avoided a strike and gave union members their biggest victory ever. Even the Vice President had plenty to say about it in a recent visit.
But just because the “big three” operators in town have signed new deals doesn’t mean other properties have made the same deal. While Four Seasons, Mirage/Hard Rock, Palms and the Tropicana have signed new deals, others are outstanding.
Culinary Union sets a strike deadline for several properties
In a tweet sent on Monday morning, the union announced that nearly 8,000 members will strike on February 2nd if a new deal is not met, and 📢BREAKING: Culinary Union sets STRIKE DEADLINE: February 2, 2024 at 5:00am for nearly 8,000 hospitality workers in Las Vegas -
If negotiations breakdown ahead of deadline, worker negotiating committee may call for strike sooner at individual properties.https://t.co/kpX5WmSvKH pic.twitter.com/RJkOTDLo1x
On and near the Las Vegas Strip, Phil Ruffin’s Circus Circus and Treasure Island are eyed in the announcement, as is Trump International Hotel Las Vegas, which he is a part owner in. The Rio, Strat Westgate also find themselves on the wrong side of the list.
Meanwhile, all of Downtown find themselves on the list. From The Plaza to the El Cortez and everything in between, not a single Downtown property finds themselves in the good graces of the Union right now.
It is worth noting they mention in the tweet that “if negotiations breakdown ahead of deadline, worker negotiating committee may call for strike sooner at individual properties.” So a strike could come sooner rather than later. With Super Bowl right around the corner, that’s exactly what these properties don’t want right now. The union is also associated with the Bartenders Local 165.
In the meantime, sit and grab your popcorn as more negotiations take place beginning Tuesday, January 9th and continuing through next week.
