Keep The Toys Downstairs — A Mom’s Perspective
I was talking with a friend the other day about the chaos they have going on downstairs at their home because the kids’ toys are all over the living room. They said they wanted to bring all of the toys upstairs to the kid’s rooms to declutter and so the kids spent time in their rooms. I immediately thought about my downstairs. I have toys all over the couch, the floor, the T.V. stand, the kitchen island, and the dining room table. While you would think I would totally understand, and I do, I said, “Keep the toys downstairs!”
You see, I have two boys with a BIG age gap. Our oldest is 15 years old and our youngest is 4. When I look at all of my 4 year old’s toys in my living room (it sounds cliche) it feels like yesterday they were the toys of my oldest… the one who spends about 95% of his time in his room. Unless he is at school, sports, or out with friends. It’s like Christmas for me when I see him downstairs for more than a few minutes.
Do I love stepping on Legos and Hot Wheels with no shoes on? No, of course not. But I know now that I will miss them when they aren’t there. I know firsthand because I missed them when my oldest didn’t leave toys downstairs anymore.
Cherish this time, hold it tight.
I gave my friend some intel on teenagers… you see, they spend ALL of their time in their room so take toy time and cherish it. If you have ‘Rock Em Sock Em Robots’ in place of a nice glass vase and candle on the T.V. stand or if you have 100 legos on your island in place of a beautiful flower centerpiece, soak that all in. Take mental pictures of the chaos because pretty soon there won’t be any chaos, and your best friends will be in their room.
I read the book, Let Me Hold You Longer, by Karen Kingsbury when my oldest was about 8 years old and I think about it daily.
Time goes by entirely too fast. It goes so fast that you don’t even realize it’s happening. I don’t remember the time I put up my oldest last toy sitting in the living room but I know I did it. These precious times are over far too fast so soak it up all. Breathe it in and step on all of the legos. Keep the toys downstairs.
