Las Vegas Students To ‘Have A Ball’ In Sphere Design Contest
For artists, your canvas is as large as the one in front of you. It might be a literal canvas, a phone, a television or movie screen. Well, a new Sphere design contest will have students clamoring for arguably the largest canvas of all. Best of all, students in the Las Vegas valley have the first crack at it.
The Sphere Student Design Challenge
This is a big deal. Arguably the biggest deal. The “Sphere XO Student Design Challenge” is putting the incredible Sphere exosphere screen in the hands of talented student artists with incredible ideas. The screen that is clad around the multi billion dollar venue is the largest video screen in the world. To put it in perspective, Resorts World has the second largest in the world. The Sphere’s exosphere is larger by a factor of over three. Yeah, a big deal.

The Sphere has teamed up with the Clark County School District and UNLV for the challenge. This will involve a lot of “out of the box thinking”. Usually a canvas (be it a literal canvas, a screen, a wall mural) is 2D. It is flat. Designing for the Sphere will take incredible imagination and effort. In total, over 100,000 students are eligible for the competition from elementary school through college.
How To Enter The Sphere Design Contest
If you (or your student) has what it takes to design for the largest screen on the scene, listen up. The first challenge will be 4th Of July themed. You might remember the Sphere made its original splash on July 4th last year. Eight students will be selected in total and will be voted for by the public on the Sphere website, along with past exosphere designers.
CCSD students in grades 4 through 8 are eligible to take part, with nearly 300 students making it through to the competition, with the district deciding the top 60 to move forward to a public vote. Meanwhile 30 CCSD high school students and 30 UNLV College Of Fine Arts students will be selected by their respective school administrators to take part.
Come late May, the voting for the 120 finalists will begin. Half of the winners will be determined by the public vote, while the other half will be selected by Exosphere artists Refik Anadol and Michela Picchi. In total, two students from elementary, middle and high school as well as UNLV will be chosen.
High school and UNLV winners will get a $10,000 scholarship. Elementary and middle school competitors will win $10,000 for their particular school’s art program. Plus they’ll get to send their entire school to The Sphere Experience which (looks at the prices) is about a $58,000,000 value. (Joking.)
So get creative kids! The Sphere design contest could be your big break!
