The Thing That Changed Pop Culture 20 Years Ago
I’m getting ready to head to my 20-year reunion. 20 years! What? It made me think back to the year 2004 and the crazy pop culture things that happened. One of the crazy things from 2004 was nothing was “trending”. It wasn’t even a word that we used frequently. But that doesn’t mean that the world didn’t know if something nuts happened. We got our celeb info from TRL, Star, and People magazine.
Some people remember when Ashley Simpson got caught lip syncing on Saturday Night Live. Not only did she get the biggest laugh of the night it extended for a few months and people were still laughing.
If you know me you know my favorite show ever is “Friends” and they wrapped up the show in 2004. It was the most watched show of the 2000’s and when the last episode had 52 million viewers. Crazy yes, but not the craziest.
All throughout high school I remember my best friends and I walking to McDonalds (when we had metabolisms) and ordering nuggets and a super size french fry. Senior year we were unable to do that because the Super Size menu went bye bye. That was around the same time “Super Size Me”, the documentary came out. A man did an experiment and ate only McDonalds for a month to see what would happen to him. As you can imagine he gained weight and his energy dropped significantly.
On top of the documentary “Super Size Me,” and “Mean Girls”, there was a lot of great T.V. coming out as well. The show “Lost” premiered and hooked us all in for 6 seasons. Desperate Housewives also came out and continues to release new spin-offs still today.
But the thing that changed everything 20 years ago and would shake pop culture then and still does today… Ladies and gentlemen that is the year that Britney Spears married Kevin Federline. I don’t want to say that was the worst mistake of her life because they got two beautiful boys out of it but it actually changed pop culture and how the press and the paparazzi handle things still today. Aggressively. It was the hottest story and stayed in the headlines when they got divorced in 2007 and continued for the last 20 years.
