Mastering Online Selling: 9 Tips For Success And Scam Prevention
I recently tried selling my old refrigerator online and it was such a hard process. Online selling can be annoying but if you know the tips and tricks of buying and selling it can be easier for you.
Selling items online has become a convenient and lucrative option for a lot of people these days. Platforms like OfferUp and Facebook Marketplace offer easy ways to connect buyers and sellers. But you know with the convenience also comes the risk of scammers and just pure annoyances. To try to avoid that here are some tips you can do to make your selling seamless:
- LEAST AMOUNT OF QUESTIONS: To make sure you aren’t getting a ton of annoying questions taking up a lot of your time. Make sure that your description is super detailed and that you take high-quality pictures from all angles. The more info and pictures the better.
- SET FAIR PRICE: Do your research before posting items. Try to get a good gauge on how much the item is worth in the store and what other items like it are selling for on apps you’re using. Factor in usage, condition, and demand when selling.
- RESPOND: People want to hear back from you immediately when they message with questions or an offer the quicker you respond the quicker you can hopefully get your item sold.
- MEET AT SAFE LOCATIONS: Safety first! Try not to go alone if possible. Choose a good public place, avoid areas that are secluded or dark. Try to do it during the day.
- CASH: I know it’s hard to get people that have cash nowadays but if you can try to do cash so you don’t have to wait for a Zelle or Venmo definitely not a check. (who uses checks anyway)
Now let’s talk about how to avoid scams when buying or selling:
- VERIFY: Check the buyer or seller’s profile and history. I always try to find them on other platforms to see if they look sketchy.
- NOBODY WANTS TO OVERPAY: avoid the people who are offering to pay you more than you posted it for. Nobody wants to pay MORE for an item. That is probably a scammer.
- SECURE PAYMENT: Make sure you are transferring the goods and payment at the same time. Not upfront if you are buying.
- TRUST: Trust your gut and try to trust the people you are doing business with online. The internet is a scary place.
By using these 9 tips and common sense your buying and selling online should be more smooth. Happy shopping!
