Dear, Athlete – Love, Sports Mom
Dear my athlete from your sports mom,
Think about your favorite thing to do. What do you truly enjoy doing? The thing that makes you happy no matter what. Is it playing the sport you play? Now think about x1000 and that’s how much your parents love watching you play the sports that you love.
Being a sports mom is my favorite thing
Watching you play football is my favorite thing in the world. I know it won’t last forever no matter the level you continue to and have the opportunity to play. Wayne Gretzky is the greatest hockey player and arguably the greatest athlete of all time. He played in the NHL for 20 years.
When he retired he asked his dad to drop him off at his last game at Madison Square Garden, like he’d dropped him off 100s of times before at practices and games at all levels. When they got there, his dad looked at him and said something along the lines of – ‘Are you sure you don’t want to play one more year?’
Now this is the joy we truly feel watching the blood sweat and tears our kids put into their craft. In my senior year of swimming, we had a spaghetti dinner at my house as it was tradition my entire high school swimming career. Before every meet a parent would host a spaghetti dinner.
At this particular one though, we ended up getting into a food fight – spaghetti, garlic bread, and even flour from the pantry was EVERYWHERE. Life of a sports mom.
Years later I asked my mom how mad she was that she had to pick up flour from her entire downstairs for probably weeks. She smiled and said she “wasn’t mad at all” because she knew that spaghetti dinner was the last spaghetti dinner she would ever host for me and she took mental pictures of the memories we made, and she made that day.
So today and always when your parents want a picture before or after the game, or ask how practice was, do they cheer extremely loud in the stands, maybe even have megaphones and cow bells… look up at them – looking at you – because you both are creating the best memories of your lives in those moments.
Being a sports mom is my favorite thing in this world and I know my guy is a freshman and if I could keep him there I would. Just know I take mental pictures of these moments and I’ll keep them forever.
Love, Sports Mom
