Beginner’s Guide To Yoga: Poses, Benefits, And Tips
Yoga is an awesome way to improve your body and brain. Good for you physically and mentally. But stepping into a yoga studio for the first time can be intimidating. I know it was for me. The thought of them saying “Do this pose” and I don’t know what it is or how to do it was terrifying.
Yoga is scary and you may not think it can possibly be for you, but yoga is for everyone! Here is my beginner’s guide to help you ease into yoga so you can be more confident in your poses!
Beginner’s Guide To Yoga
Start with four of these simple poses to build your foundation:
- Mountain Pose – You stand tall feet together, and relax your shoulders, arms at your side. Take a deep breath and raise your hands over your head, palms touching each other, and reach as high as you can with your fingers pointed at the sky. Easy right?
- Downdog or Downward Dog – Start on your hands and knees, make sure your wrists are aligned with your shoulders and knees with your hips. Tuck your toes under and lift your hips up and back making your legs straight so you are like the letter V shape with your body and keep your head between your arms. Feel the stretch?
- Child’s Pose – Kneel on the floor, sit back on your heels, and fold your body or push your body forward, bringing your forehead to the ground. Stretch your arms out to the sides of you or straight out in front of you overhead.
- Warrior – Stand with legs wide apart. Turn your right foot out 90 degrees and left foot in (just a little bit) Bend your right knee over your right ankle and keep your left leg straight. Raise your arms over your head and put your palms together. (This is my favorite one)
So Many Benefits Of Yoga
Flexibility, strength, and balance, to start. Do it on the regular so you stretch and tone your muscles and calm your mind because it promotes mental clarity—a true peace of mind. The breathing you learn in yoga is amazing too. It will lower your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Yoga is for everyone! Good luck!
If you are a beginner a couple of things to remember… Start slow, listen to your body, stay consistent, and be patient. As with anything practice makes perfect. You aren’t going to do it perfectly in the beginning but the more you do the more you will learn and the better you will feel. You will end up in the front of the hot yoga classes with the Yogis in no time!
Namaste!
