Being a Football Mom: Friendships, Fights, And Growth
Being a football mom is… Well – it’s my favorite thing but it’s an adventure like no other. From the high highs to the low lows, it has changed me in ways I never imagined. The past 10 years of football have been full of laughter, tears, friendships, and because I am sometimes obnoxious and so are other people a few confrontations. It’s a crazy community to be a part of but I love it.
Friendships
When my son first started football, I had no idea that I was about to meet people that will probably be in our lives forever. The connection football moms have is something truly special. We bond over early morning practices, fundraisers, getting stains out of jerseys, and the stress we share on game days. We talk about how we are going to talk to them on the ride home from the losses and how to keep them humble in the wins.
The Personal Growth
Being a football mom has taught me about myself. How? I have no idea. I’ve learned to be more patient and understanding, becoming more organized and responsible knowing that maybe one week a mom had a lot going on and she couldn’t get to the snacks just like other parents have done for me when I forgot.
I have also become more outgoing (believe it or not). At the beginning of my football mom years, I would keep to myself in the stands. Wave to parents from afar. But now the more people I talk to the better. I go up to upcoming freshman’s parents and let them know I’m here and I’m crazy and I have the cowbells. I was always my son’s biggest cheerleader but now I am a cheerleader to all of my adopted children aka football players.
Not Everything Is Peachy
Of course, not every interaction I have had in my football mom life has been…nice. Football games can get intense, and emotions run really really high from the coaches, and players to the parents. I have had a handful of run-ins with parents who take it a little too far. But I think that ratio is pretty good. 10 years in and under 5 yelling matches with parents. One time I told a mom to sit down because she was yelling at our kids and told her to “calm down” She lost it and said she was going to punch me in the face. I had nothing to say because I am more of a mouth runner than a punch thrower. I didn’t tell her to try I just sat down. Everyone told me if I’m going to be sticking up for the kids I better take some self-defense classes.
Unforgettable Connections
Beyond the fights and friendships, being a football mom has connected me with the community and opened my eyes to how amazing and supportive Las Vegas really is. We’ve organized team dinners, carpool schedules, fundraising events, and working together to support youth sports and our boys. Beyond the field keeping these friendships and strong support networks.
Are These Mine Or His
As I look forward to more seasons, more games, and more moments, I think to myself that I have believed that I was watching my son have the best moments of my life but maybe just maybe these are mine. I’m grateful for every moment.
