After taking a break in 2023, the American Music Awards (AMAs) will hit the pause button again this year: But don’t worry, they’ll be back in 2025! This news coincides with the recent announcement of the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) nominations on Tuesday (Aug. 7).
The Latest on the American Music Awards
The AMAs are taking another year off, as revealed by CBS and Dick Clark Productions. Following their absence in 2023, the AMAs will also skip 2024, with the next ceremony scheduled for May 2025. This marks a big change for the AMAs, which will make their springtime debut for the first time ever.
In place of the traditional awards show, CBS will air a two-hour American Music Awards 50th Anniversary Special on Oct. 6 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, simulcast on both coasts. The special will celebrate the AMAs' 50-year history and marks the beginning of a new partnership with CBS, which has also taken over airing Dick Clark Productions’ Golden Globe Awards.
The anniversary special will feature new performances, artist interviews, special guests, and exclusive footage from the Dick Clark Productions archives. It will highlight the evolution of specific artists and genres at the AMAs, as well as key award and performance milestones. The performances, created exclusively for the special, will include collaborations, debuts from today’s top stars, and appearances from AMAs legends. Details on the performers will be announced in the coming weeks.
According to CBS and Dick Clark Productions, the program will feature themed highlights from the AMAs’ expansive show archives, each culminating in an original performance or artist interview. Segments will look back on the evolution of specific artists and genres at the AMAs, as well as key award and performance milestones.
The performances, created exclusively for the anniversary special, will include collaborations, debuts from today’s hottest stars, and appearances from AMAs legends. Performers for the special will be announced in the coming weeks.
In addition to the CBS broadcast, the special will be available to stream live and on-demand for Paramount+ with Showtime subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the following day.
MTV’s Video Music Awards Nominations
In other music news, the nominees for the VMAs have been revealed, with Taylor Swift leading the pack with ten nominations, mostly for her black-and-white music video for “Fortnight,” the lead single from her album The Tortured Poets Department. Post Malone, who collaborated with Swift on the track, follows closely with nine nominations.
Sabrina Carpenter, Eminem, and Ariana Grande each received six nominations, while SZA and Megan Thee Stallion earned five apiece. Other artists with multiple nominations include Olivia Rodrigo, Blackpink’s Lisa, Anitta, Dua Lipa, Tyla, and GloRilla.
The VMAs will be broadcast live from UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, on September 10 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The host and performers for the event have yet to be announced.
