Breaking The Rules After Labor Day
Remember when wearing white after Labor Day was the most serious faux pas you could commit? Grandma would be so upset and the fashion police would write you a serious ticket. But times have changed and it looks like that antique rule is finally out of style.
I bet if we did a survey, over half of women would say they wear white after Labor Day. Let’s talk about why this old-fashioned guideline is on its way out and why wearing white year-round is the new norm.
The History of the “No White After Labor Day” Rule
Let’s get to the origins of this crazy fashion law. According to Farmers Almanac the “no white after Labor Day” rule dates back to the late 19th century! After the Civil War, high society in the United States created a dress code to distinguish themselves from the working class. White clothing was considered leisure wear for those who could afford to go on summer vacations. After Labor Day, as the summer vacation season ended, wearing white was a sign that you were still holding on to summer. And honestly, I think that you are of a different caliber if you can keep your white things white.
But let’s face it it’s 2024, we don’t need fashion RULES. You dress however you want to. Fashion is now about personal style and my personal style is black always and comfortable… always.
For those of you who can keep your white clothing clean and love to wear it, I envy you. White is chic, crisp, and so versatile.
Why We Should All Wear White After Labor Day
- It’s a color that goes with literally everything in your closet.
- White is one of those magical colors that can flatter any skin tone.
- It’s fun to break the rules a little bit.
At the end of the day, you wear what you want! Fashion should be fun and freeing, not restrictive. The days of rigid fashion rules are long gone, and the “no white after Labor Day” rule is long gone.
So go ahead, dig that white dress out of the back of your closet, rock those white jeans. After all, rules are meant to be broken, especially when they’re as outdated as this one.
Here’s to a future of more fashion freedom and fewer silly rules. White after Labor Day? We’re all in!
