Breaking Down Gaming In The 90s

If you were a 90s kid, chances are you spent countless hours on your TV screen playing two of the most iconic video games of all time: Sonic the Hedgehog and Crash Bandicoot. Both games captured the true essence of gaming in the 90s. Trying to pick a favorite between the two? I don’t know how to do it but I am going to break them down so we can try. 

Sonic the Hedgehog: Fast & Fun

Let’s start with the blue blur himself and also his best friend, Tails. Gaming in the 90s started with Sonic the Hedgehog was released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis, this game wasn’t just fun…it was revolutionary. When it came out, Mario had pretty much everyone locked down, but Sonic brought something fresh to the table: SPEED! Who can forget zooming through the Green Hill Zone and collecting the shiny gold rings? Remember how triggered we would get when we would get hit and they would spin out everywhere. We were the first to rage I truly think. If you had a Sega Genesis, Sonic was a must in your collection. 

Crash Bandicoot: Spinning & Destruction

Fast forward to 1996, and over to the PlayStation, a new hero was on your TV – Crash Bandicoot. Sonic was all about speed, Crash took a much different approach. It was jungle mayhem. Jumping, spinning, and smashing crates was his thing. His wild boulder chase or riding the hog through the terrain made it an instant addiction. 

A Console Showdown For Gaming In The 90s

Sonic had the Sega Genesis, and Crash was on the PlayStation exclusive. Two powerhouse consoles when gaming in the the 90s. The Genesis gave Sonic’s speed a smooth, crisp look for sure but then Crash Bandicoot’s 3D graphics pushed the boundaries, especially for our time. PlayStation set the stage for the future of gaming and what we know now. Both games were so much fun!

The Verdict? A Tie for me. 

Sonic brought speed, rings, and robots but Crash gave us crazy and chaotic. You just couldn’t put either of them down. Choosing between the two of them is impossible. Both of these games defined what it meant to be gaming in the 90s.
