Tom Brady Secures Minority Stake In Raiders: What This Means For Las Vegas
Tom Brady now owns part of the Las Vegas Raiders.
On Tuesday, Brady announced on social media that he was unanimously approved as an owner of the Las Vegas Raiders. Brady specifically will own a 5% stake in the franchise, according to Reuters.
“I’ve learned that at its core, football is a game of teamwork, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. The Raiders franchise, and the city of Las Vegas embody these same values, and I’m honored to become part of the city,” Brady said in a statement.
According to CNN, the purchase was reported a year and a half ago, but it required the approval of three-quarters of the league’s owners.
Along with that, AP reports the deal was initially agreed upon in May 2023, but it was delayed due to owners being concerned that Brady was “receiving too much of a discount from Davis.” There was also concern over Brady’s job as a Fox sports broadcaster and the conflicts of interest associated with that broadcasting position.
Can Tom Brady Play For The Raiders?
Although many users on social media express their wishes for Brady to hit the field with a Raiders jersey on, he can’t.
According to Yahoo Sports, Brady’s stake as being a minority owner means, “Brady cannot unretire (again) and play in the NFL.”
A reporter from NFL on CBS asked Raiders’ owner Mark Davis what role he expects Brady to play in the organization.
Davis responded with, “It’s kind of putting the cart before the horse. We wanted to get to this point first before we started defining anything of that nature and all of that. But it’s just exciting. We traded Davante Adams for Tom Brady.”
Granted, Davis was being slightly cheeky with that Adams comment. But, Davis further said that although Brady can’t play, he can help pick out and train future quarterbacks for the team.
There will also be restrictions placed on Brady regarding his broadcasting job. According to the Bleacher Report, Brady will no longer be permitted into another team’s facility, he’s not permitted to witness practice, and he’s not permitted to attend broadcast production meetings in person or virtually. He’s not allowed to publically criticize game officials and other clubs. He will be subjected to the NFL’s gambling policy and the NFL’s anti-tampering policy.
Along with Brady getting approved, former Raiders and Patriots player and hall of famer Richard Seymour was also approved for a minority stake in the Raiders, CBS reported.
