Game Over: Barry Odom Is Leaving UNLV Football Program
Man, it feels like just last week we were talking about how UNLV football head coach Barry Odom has been the difference maker in the Rebels football program. Well, here we are a week later. The Rebels fell short in the Mountain West Championship game, and now the news that Barry Odom is leaving UNLV.
The news came down earlier today. Odom, who has led the UNLV Rebels football program for two very impressive seasons, would be departing for bigger pastures: Purdue.
Why Barry Odom Is Leaving UNLV
Yikes. Things seemed to be going so well barring the slip in the Mountain West Championship. Why would he want to leave a good thing?
Well, when you look at the legacy of Purdue’s football program, you’ll get a better understanding as to why Barry Odom is leaving UNLV. They’ve been a team since 1887 (not a typo) and have a winning all-time record, several conference titles to their name and just a legacy behind it. As a head coach, your goal is to go for the gold, be it financial or trophy wise, or both.
This is a shot for Barry Odom to go a program that is in need of new leadership. Their latest head coach, Ryan Walters, got an absolute shellacking in his two years with the program. He lost his final game against the team’s arch nemesis Indiana by a score of 66-0. That bad. Odom has only one place to go, and that is up.
As for the other gold, UNLV was paying Odom $1.75 million base, versus Walters’ $4 million with Purdue. So, he’ll be making bank.
Wait – What About The Bowl Game?!
UNLV Rebels Football still has one game to go this season, facing Cal in the LA Bowl on December 18th. Unfortunately, Odom is already out the door.
In the head coach role, wide receivers coach Del Alexander will be picking up the slack according to the LVRJ.
Who knew the loss against Boise State would be the second biggest loss for the program this weekend?
