UNLV Gets $15M From Las Vegas Sands To Build New Chinese Cultural Institute
The Sands Institute for Chinese Language and Culture will find its home in the renovated Maryland Administrative Building, offering Mandarin lessons and featuring cultural programming. Students and faculty will connect with their Chinese peers through exchange programs. After renovations wrap up, new classrooms, art exhibitions, and film screenings will be available.
“This partnership with UNLV reflects our dedication to global engagement and cultural exchange,” Sands CEO Robert G. Goldstein said in a press release. “The Sands Institute for Chinese Language and Culture at UNLV will serve as a vital resource for students, scholars, and the broader community to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of China.”
Adding this center helps cement Las Vegas’s role as a global business destination. Goldstein explains, “We are honored to support an initiative that will enhance Chinese cultural literacy and provide significant opportunities for meaningful intercultural dialogue in one of the world’s most visible cities and one of its most dynamic universities.”
The $40 billion company operates casinos in Macau and Singapore. Even though Sands sold off its Vegas properties in 2021, it expands its influence on the city by backing community initiatives.
While developing this intercultural educational center, Sands is working to enter gambling markets in Texas. They also hope to establish a casino at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island.
This new institute aligns perfectly with UNLV’s goals for international education and its commitment to diversity, as told by President Keith E. Whitfield to News3LV. When it opens, students will explore Chinese culture, from its language to its traditional practices.
