Vegas Golden Knights Launch LosVGK To Boost Latino Hockey, Will Host 2025 International Tournament
Hosted at the America First Center from March 19 to 22, it will feature men’s and women’s teams from Argentina, Colombia, Puerto Rico, and Mexico. They’ll play through three 20-minute periods, NHL-style, following International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) rules.
President of the Amerigol International Hockey Association, Juan Carlos Otero, noted his amazement at the opportunity. “It’s something that we’re very proud of to be able to work with these NHL teams, go into these cities, and put on an event to raise awareness of Latin American Hockey,” said Otero in a recent interview with The Las Vegas Sun.
This tournament shows major progress for hockey in Latin America, and Otero hopes it will extend its reach beyond the “What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas” motto. It also aims to improve new divisions for younger players – under 16, 14, and 12 – and give more kids a chance to play.
Team Argentina’s Iara Haiek expressed the pride players feel in representing their countries in Las Vegas. Mexico Warriors Arturo Garcia told The Las Vegas Sun, “Since Vegas is a place that people from all over the world go to, I feel like it’s a great place for people actually to see the sport.”
To build local Latino community engagement, the Golden Knights held hockey clinics abroad, starting with Mexico in September. Las Vegas will host Puerto Rico’s team for a special ball hockey workshop to further community involvement.
Since launching LosVGK last October, the Golden Knights have made Las Vegas a central hub for ice hockey’s expansion across Latin America.
