5 Christmas Horror Movies to Give the Season a Little More Chill
It’s the season for ugly sweaters, peppermint lattes, and curling up on your couch with a blanket covering your face… not because of the cold but because of the jump scares. While most are enjoying the comfort of cozy fireplaces, the smell of freshly baked Christmas cookies, and heartwarming Christmas rom-coms, some people enjoy Christmas horror movies because why should Halloween have all the fun?
5 Christmas Horror Movies
If you’re looking to spend your holiday season screaming your head off, here are five Christmas horror movies guaranteed to make your Christmas not a “silent night.”
Krampus (2015)
Krampus is based on the character from the German folklore. He’s basically the anti-Santa who’s in charge of those on St. Nick’s naughty list. Starring Adam Scott, Toni Colette, and David Koechner, among others. The film follows a dysfunctional family that keeps on fighting even during Christmas Eve, causing Max, played by Emjay Anthony, the son of Tom and Sarah Engel (Adam Scott and Toni Colette), to lose his festive spirit and unleash Krampus.
Better Watch Out (2016)
Remember Home Alone? That movie with the lovable mischievous kid who outsmarts robbers with traps? Well, this movie isn’t like that. Although they both have a young boy as a lead, that’s where the similarities end because Better Watch Out has a lot more blood, deceit, and a sadistic twist. The movie is about 17-year-old Ashley, a babysitter (Olivia DeJonge) looking after Luke Lerner (Levi Miller), a 12-year-old boy. Luke is in love with Ashley and tries to seduce her by trying to scare her. However, Ashley realized what was happening and asked her boyfriend for help. Things got out of hand and what was supposed to be a quiet night of babysitting escalated into a Christmas nightmare.
A Christmas Horror Story (2015)
If you want not just one, but four Christmas horror stories, watch the appropriately titled, A Christmas Horror Story starring William Shatner as DJ Dangerous Dan. During his show, four interconnected stories are happening, including a ghost who wants to give birth to her child, a changeling (a supernatural creature who replaces a human they have kidnapped), a showdown between Krampus and Santa Claus, and zombie elves. It’s four Christmas horror movies for the price of one, and yes, it’s as awesome as it sounds.
The Lodge (2019)
If you’re in the mood for a horror movie with a lot of traumas, The Lodge is here to ruin your Christmas spirit. The film centers around Grace (Riley Keough), who’s about to spend Christmas with her boyfriend’s children in a remote lodge. Things take a chilling turn when they start to experience strange and eerie events connected to Grace’s past as the only survivor of a mass suicide by a cult led by her father. If you like your Christmas with a dose of unsettling horror or if you’re planning on spending Christmas in a secluded cabin to get away from your nosey relatives, watch The Lodge, and it might change your mind.
Black Christmas (2019)
Are you a fan of Christmas, slasher films and sororities vs. fraternities? If you are, then you’re going to love Black Christmas. A loose remake of the 1974 film, this movie follows a group of sorority sisters being killed one by one by an unknown masked killer. It also has an element of social commentary with a group of strong, independent women fighting back literally against toxic, entitled men who have been abusing their power and those people with authority enabling them. It’s a Christmas horror movie that will have you shouting, “girl power!” in the end.
