Harry Reid International Airport Sees Massive Lines, Hundred Flight Cancellations
Harry Reid International Airport was one of the many airports affected by a global technology outage, causing issues with IT systems and creating flight delays and cancellations.
The outage is linked to Crowdstrike, a cybersecurity technology company. The Federal Aviation Administration said they were monitoring a “technical issue impacting IT systems at U.S. airlines. Several airlines have requested FAA assistance with ground stops until the issue is resolved.”
A Hundred Flights Canceled At Harry Reid International Airport
In the past 24 hours, 104 flights were canceled at Harry Reied International Airport, according to Flight Aware, a company that tracks aviation data. USA Today reports that thousands of flights were canceled across the country. Even public transportation systems were impacted by the outage.
Photos from local media outlets show travelers waiting in long lines for baggage checks and the TSA security checkpoint. Lines snaked around the airport, and many travelers said they’ve been waiting for hours to receive flight updates, 8 News Now reports.
Harry Reid International Airport said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) that the global outage has caused delays and cancellations across different airlines.
“Check with your airline for the status of your flight and use online services to change or adjust travel plans,” the airport said.
Why Did The Crowdstrike Outage Happen?
Crowdstrike is a cyber security company whose clients include Amazon, Google, Target, and the U.S. Government, Reuters reports.
The company’s CEO George Kurtz said on X that the outage was not a cybersecurity issue, but a defect from a single content update for Windows hosts — specifically an issue with the Falcon content update. Mac and Linux hosts were “not impacted.”
“Today was not a security or cyber incident. Our customers remain fully protected. We understand the gravity of the situation and are deeply sorry for the inconvenience and disruption,” Kurtz further said on X.
If you’re traveling to Las Vegas then expect delays and long wait times while flying. The same goes for those who are traveling out from Vegas. Remember to be patient and to be kind to airline workers, who are working to smooth out this technical nightmare on the front lines.
