Digital Film Technology Threatens Drive-In Theaters With Closure

NELIGH, NE – SEPTEMBER 28: Dillon Smith gets popcorn for customers in the concession stand at the TK/Starlite Drive-In Theater on September 28, 2013 in Neligh, Nebraska. The theater, which opened in 1952, is one of only two drive-in theaters left in Nebraska, a state that once had almost 50. At the peak of their popularity in the late 1950s there were between 4 and 5 thousand drive-in theaters in the United States, there are now only about 350. As movie studios begin to phase out distribution of 35mm film prints in favor of digital media, the high cost drive-in theaters face when switching to a digital projection system is expected to force more of these theaters to close. The TK/ Starlite installed a digital projector earlier this year.

It's here! It's Popcorn Day! Who doesn't love the savory, buttery goodness that is popcorn? It's hard to imagine a world without it. But did you know that popcorn has been around for thousands of years?

It all started with corn - specifically, domesticated corn. About 10,000 years ago, in what is now Mexico, people began to domesticate maize (corn). Archaeologists believe that it wasn't until about 4,700 BC that the ancient Inca people discovered the secret to popping corn kernels. The evidence they found came in the form of fossilized popped kernels found in Peru. As time went on, more and more cultures began to pop their own corn kernels.

Popcorn Through the 19th Century and Beyond:

By the 19th century, popping corn had become commonplace and people were popping their kernels by hand on stovetops. During this time, popcorn was primarily used as a snack food or for decorative purposes. However, the invention of automated popcorn machines in 1885 changed everything. These machines made it easier than ever before to make large batches of popcorn quickly and cheaply. This allowed popcorn to become a popular snack food in movie theaters across America.

Popcorn has come a long way but tell me why we still have no idea how, at home, it's never as good as the movie theater.

Popcorn is one of those classic snacks that never goes out of style. From its origins in Mexico over 10,000 years ago to its rise as a popular movie theater treat during the 20th century, popcorn has come a long way! We can still appreciate its humble beginnings as simply popped corn kernels on stove tops over two thousand years ago but also appreciate the way shops in Las Vegas and all over the country have made it a gourmet snack.
