There are a few topics that can lead to arguments at the dinner table. Politics. Religion. Pineapple on pizza. But for whatever reason, candy corn has drawn the vehement anger of some. Well it turns out Las Vegas tops the country in love of the waxy Halloween candy.
A new survey from Byte.com found that Las Vegas searches for "candy corn" the most in the country, followed by Denver and Seattle. Cities like New York, Los Angeles and Philly were found to be the least obsessed with the candy. 34% of Americans say the actively "hate" the candy, while only 22% said they love it. The rest of the people, we assume, have other things to worry about.
Candy corn obviously made it to the top of the list of America's Most Hated Candy. That was followed by Hot Tamales (they get stuck in your teeth), Dots (they get stuck in your teeth), Caramel Apple Suckers (what are these?!) and Mike & Ike (whoever said they hate these are heathens).
It's not ALL negative!
The survey wasn't all about hate though! America's favorite candy was undoubtedly Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Those, in the fridge, then pop them in your mouth. You can't beat it. Rounding off the top 5 were Kit Kat, M&M's, Twix and Butterfinger.
M&M's are the top candy in Nevada. They are owned by Mars, Incorporated, just like Las Vegas favorite Ethel M's Chocolates. The M in Ethel M's is the same as one of the M's in M&M's. (The other M is for "Murrie", the last name of the son of Hershey Chocolate's then president who owned a bit of the product).
Now that you know the list, send your little ones out this Halloween with strict instructions of what to bring back, so you can purposely give them one piece a week while you eat the rest until Thanksgiving.
For a list of the top candies around the country, scroll below!
Alabama - Rolo
Easily one of the most under-appreciated candies there are. Grab a tube of these chocolate and caramel candies and bring joy to your mouth.
Alaska - 3 Musketeers
Alaska is a unique state for a multitude of reasons. 3 Musketeers is one of them. The nougaty chocolatey goodness is Alaska's favorite... and Alaska's only.
Arizona - SweeTARTS
They are sweet. They are tart. Just like life.
Arkansas - Reese's
The OG. The King. The Champ. The most popular candy in America is tops in Arkansas and four other states.
California - Nerds
The first of SEVEN states that like these things. Really?! Nerds?!
Colorado - Milky Way
Caramel. Chocolate. Colorado.
Connecticut - Hot Tamales
One of four states that love these spicy Mike&Ike's. While the other states make sense, we've been to Connecticut. Nothing spicy about it. Maybe they need a little spice in their lives.
Delaware - Hershey's Chocolate Bar
Is there a brand more classic than Hershey? They've been at it since 1894 and their chocolate bars are still a staple, and a favorite for four states including Wayne & Garth's favorite.
Florida - Hershey's Chocolate Bar
In Florida, they eat it in one bite, lest they melt.
Georgia - Nerds
Nerds made Candy Corn once. We'll wait while you question life.
Hawaii - Milky Way
They couldn't be more different than their Milky Way twin Colorado, but they share a love in candy bars.
Idaho - Candy Corn
For a candy everyone supposedly hates, it is the favorite of six states. Take that, angry mob.
Illinois - Tootsie Roll
Whoops. Wrong Tootsie Roll. Still, Illinois has this candy all to itself.
Indiana - Butterfinger
Nobody better lay a finger on Bart's Butterfinger. And no one but Indiana did.
Iowa - Reese's
Just like Arkansas, Iowa loves these delicious cups. The perfect mix of chocolate and peanut butter.
Kansas - M&M's
They share M&M's with three other states that claim these little candies as their favorite. Chocolate. Candy shell. How can you go wrong?
Kentucky - Candy Corn
KY oh my... another state that loves America's most hated candy.
Louisiana - Hot Tamales
The land of Jambalaya! We know Louisiana loves the heat, which is why we aren't surprised by this pick.
Maine - M&M's
Maine bucks the "Nerds" trend of New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Damn meddling kids and their hippy candy.
Maryland - Hershey's Chocolate Bar
Delaware's neighbor has a candy in common. Maryland loves their Hershey's.
Massachusetts - Nerds
The state with the best education loves Nerds. We could have told you that.
Michigan - Reese's
Yet another state on the Reese's train. What is it with the peanut butter in Reese's? It's so good. How? HOW?!
Minnesota - Caramel Apple Suckers
It's a green apple lollipop dipped in caramel. We've never had it, but we are here for it.
Mississippi - Hot Tamales
M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-AYE AYE AYE! Spicy candy for a spicy state.
Missouri - Nerds
Tart. Hard. Divisive. Just like we like our celebrities.
Montana - York Peppermint Pattie
Montana. Big Sky Country and big peppermint fans too.
Nebraska - Skittles
Nebraska is shockingly the only one on the list naming Skittles as their fave. Maybe the other states heard about the guy suing them for allegedly being deadly. We dunno.
Nevada - M&M's
Nevada is the state that challenges the "melts in your mouth, not in your hand" slogan. They also melt in your car. Trust us.
New Hampshire - Nerds
Massachusetts loves Nerds. New Hampshire is Massachusetts' tax-free northern neighbor. We feel like former "Massholes" may have tweaked the numbers a bit.
New Jersey - Hershey's Chocolate Bar
I GOTCHA CHOCOLATE BAR RIGHT HEAHHH!!!! Jersey loves Hershey.
New Mexico - Hot Tamales
Quite possibly the least surprising on the list. New Mexico puts hot stuff on everything, so why not Halloween?
New York - Rolo
New York and Alabama may not agree on much. But they agree on this.
North Carolina - Milk Duds
Really, North Carolina? REALLY?! Milk Duds don't even have an official Instagram account. Cmon. You're all alone on this one because it's not 1968.
North Dakota - Caramel Apple Suckers
One of three states who love these altered lollies. We didn't know this was a thing.
Ohio - Candy Corn
O-H... OH NO! Another state has fallen victim to America's candy enemy number one.
Oklahoma - SweeTARTS
Ooooooklahoma where the candy makes your eyes squint! They share their love of the these tart candies with Arizona and an unlikely match...
Oregon - Candy Corn
Oregon? More like Ore-GONE all of your friends will be if you admit you like candy corn. But hey, Portland marches to their own drum.
Pennsylvania - Hershey's Chocolate Bar
I mean, the bar was named after a town in their state. What'd you expect?!
Rhode Island - M&M's
Tiny state. Tiny candy. Need we say more.
South Carolina - Reese's
In the battle between Carolinas, South reigns surpreme. While it's northern brother toils in the pain that is Milk Duds, South Carolina holds up the Cups.
South Dakota - Caramel Apple Suckers
Awh, the Dakotas match. That's cute.
Tennessee - Reese's
Tennessee? Reese's Peanut Butter Cups are the only 10 they see.
Texas - SweeTARTS
While Texas and Oklahoma are bitter rivals when it comes to college football, they agree on one thing. These candies.
Utah - Candy Corn
Don't ask us how we knew Candy Corn would be Utah's favorite. We just knew. We were all thinking it.
Vermont - Kit Kat
They are the #2 candy in America, but we are surprised by how few states they topped the list of. Vermont is the 49th largest state by population... and the other state who calls them their favorite is the 50th!
Virginia - Nerds
Virginia is for lovers. Lovers of Nerds.
Washington - Nerds
Washington is the final of the seven states that name Nerds their favorite. Weird.
West Virginia - York Peppermint Pattie
They are joined by Montana in their love for York. They are delicious. A first choice though?
Wisconsin - Candy Corn
Shockingly, Wisconsin's favorite candy is not cheese.
Wyoming - Kit Kat
Another lowly populated state, another Kit Kat fan. Kit Kat deserves better.
