An alien baby comes to earth in a spacecraft and is adopted by human parents. It turns out that the baby has extraordinary superpowers. Sound familiar?

But no, this isn't yet another Superman reboot. Judging by the trailer for Brightburn, the glaring simialities between the stories end with the baby's arrival on earth.

Like Superman this kid seems to have super strength, super speed, the ability to fly and shoot laser beams out of his eyes. But he doens't seem to be looking out for "truth, justice and the American way." Instead, he appears to be an agent of choas. And while the main character says in the below trailer, "I want to do good, Mom... I do" it seems that he's doing just the opposite.

The film was produced by James Gunn (writer/director of both Guardians of the Galaxy films), directed by David Yarovesky and written by Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn (cousins of James).

Brightburn opens in theaters this weekend. Watch the trailer below.

Brian has been working in pop culture and media for about three decades: he’s worked at MTV, VH1, SiriusXM, CBS and Loudwire. Besides working as a writer and an editor-in-chief, he’s also appeared on air as a pundit, guested on radio shows and hosted podcasts. Over the years, he’s interviewed the surviving members of Led Zeppelin, the members of U2, Beyonce, Pink, Usher, Stevie Nicks, Lorde… and is grateful to have had the chance to interview Joe Strummer of the Clash and Tom Petty.
