Kids have been doing dumb things for a very long time, sometimes it feels like they get worse. From taking off their own braces with pliers to sissy tests (burning themselves with erasers), there are some pretty crazy trends out there. So, let’s take a walk down memory lane and share some of the dumb things we did when we were younger, and things kids are doing today!

The haircuts we HAD to have
Ah yes, the silly haircuts that us middle schoolers used to get. For boys, it was pretty much about style, with haircuts like mohawks or faux hawks to spiky hairspray dos what about frosted tips? For girls, it was all about having fun. Colorful streaks or when you wanted to be Rachel from Friends. How about when we would shave the back of our heads? Of course, looking back now these styles can make us cringe but at the time they were just cool.

The Stunts We Attempted in High School
High school is often a time of pushing boundaries—and sometimes this means attempting stupid stunts that may or may not end well. Whether it was jumping off high places or daring each other to eat something, no shortage of dumb ideas floating around. Of course, looking back now these stunts can seem super dangerous but at the time they felt like harmless fun.

The Dares at College… I mean they just got worse!

College is all about making memories and having fun—which often means taking risks and pushing boundaries even further than before. Some students took up daring dares such as running across campus late at night or going streaking through the quad during finals week. Other students opted for more traditional activities like drinking games or pranks on unsuspecting roommates. Sometimes the older we were the dumber things we tried!

No matter how much time changes, it seems like kids will always find ways to do dumb things.

From silly haircuts in middle school to daring dares in college, there are plenty of embarrassing moments that we look back on fondly (or not so fondly). The next time you hear about some outrageous trend that teens are doing today, just remember that this isn’t anything new—we did plenty of dumb things too when we were young! What was your favorite dumb thing you did growing up? Share your stories in the comments below!

  • Sissy Test

This one was one I did when I was growing up. You would take your pencil eraser and erase your skin until you burned yourself. Why? I have no idea.

  • Smoking Smarties

kids indulged in smoke breaks with the candy in and around 2009. They would crush the sugar tablets into powder, and using the cellophane wrappers as bootleg rolling papers, breathed in and exhaled, producing clouds of sugar smoke.

  • Drinking Hand Sanitizer

Sounds so dumb because it is. Kids a few years ago were drinking hand sanitizer to get drunk off of it and obviously getting really sick. Thank God that one came and went before 2020 or people would really hate that generation.

  • Sex Bracelets

This one has been around forever I feel like. This one is where barely-legal girls let the guys know they’re DTF by rocking various colored jelly bracelets around their wrists that signify different sexual acts they’re willing to engage in. F>or a while I wouldn’t let Jayden (my 14 year old) wear that at all in fear they all meant something.

  • Choking Game

Another one I stupidly did in high school. This is exactly what it’s called you choke your friends until they pass out and kids get a “buzz” from it. Back when I was in high school kids said that did it instead of drinking or doing drugs. But honestly, grab a beer. It’s safer.

  • Milk Challenge

This is just asking to puke. You have 1 hour to chug an entire gallon of milk and you are guaranteed to throw up. If you don’t. Congratulations.

  • Cinnamon Challenge

Take a spoon full of cinnamon and try to eat it. If you break in even in the slightest you will choke. I do not suggest any of these including this one. I have done it and I thought I was going to die.

  • Salt and ice challenge

This one can leave permanent skin damage. They challenge themselves to press a mixture of salt and ice against their skin and then time themselves to see how long they can stand the burning sensation. The problem is that sensation is the result of a frostbite-like burn.

  • Charger and penny challenge

Talk about dumb. Possibly burning down a building. In this challenge, they take a phone charger and plug it into the wall, leaving just enough space to show the exposed prongs. Then they slide a penny down between the wall and the charger, causing a short with sparks. Burn the house down or electrocute yourself. SMH
