Youth is wasted on the young. You hear that saying from all the old people that figured things out. All those hormones and confusion had many of us pointed in the wrong direction.

But what if you could go back in time 20 years, a la Back To The Future, and give yourself advice to set you up for your future.

What one piece of advice would you give yourself? Financial advice to buy a certain stock or crypto early? Maybe personal advice to help you avoid ruts you’d experience down the road? Maybe to get rid of your goofy looking haircut, or ask your crush to prom?

Obviously it is all fantasy, but Aimee+Shawn along with our listeners have come up with a list that’d be a great jumping off point.

  • Buy Amazon, Google And Tesla Stock

Twenty years ago, these tech stocks either didn’t exist yet, or could be scarfed up for super cheap. Let’s use $1000 for our example.

    • Amazon was the equivalent of $0.75 a stock in August 2022 (after stock splits). If you invested $1000 and didn’t sell, you’d have $191,840 today.
    • Google was $2.71/share in August 2004 (after stock splits). If you invested $1000 and didn’t sell, you’d have $44,966 today.
    • Tesla was $3.66/share in August 2004 (after stock splits). If you invested $1000 and didn’t sell, you’d have a whopping $253,587 today.

And knowing that you’d see the success of these companies and continue investing… you’d be SET.

  • Leave After The First Lie

Our listener Michelle shared this on Instagram, and it can be good advice. If you’re known to get taken for a ride, sometimes you need to know it’s OK to get your things and go. You’ll save yourself a lot of time and heartbreak in the process.

  • Learn The Power of Compound Interest

Back to finances, and our listener Collin had great advice: learn the power of compound interest. He’s not lying! The earlier you learn, the better off you’ll be. The feds have a great website to show how important early investing can be. If you start setting aside $100 a month at age 30 with an 8% average return, you’ll have nearly $207,000 come age 65. But if you started at age 20, those extra 10 years can make all the difference, more than doubling the total to nearly $464,000. You might not have a time machine, but instill this in your kids early!

  • Don't Have Kids Until You're 30 (At Least)

You might totally disagree with this, or you may be part of the growing trend of people waiting until they are older to procreate. Years of Teen Mom really scared many people off. More often, women are waiting until their 30’s and 40’s to have children, versus prior generations that were marrying and popping out kids by the time Algebra class let out. There’s something to be said to enjoying life free of the craziness of parenting… but kids don’t have to be a death sentence.

  • Bitcoin. Invest In It. Even If You Don't Get It.

Woof. This is the one on the top of many people’s minds. Shawn had a friend stop him at work and say he was interested in buying Bitcoin, and Shawn scoffed. At the time, the cryptocurrency was valued at $35. Using the same $1000 example as earlier, that grand would be worth a staggering $681,791 today… and that’s with Bitcoin way off record highs from late last year, which would have the same investment valued at $1,930,914! That is, unless you spent a couple Bitcoin on pizza early on. In which case, woof. Sorry.

  • We Want Pre-Nup!

About a decade ago, the idea of a pre-nuptial agreement was a turn-off for many. Seemed like only the super rich were likely to request one, but it turns out Millennials are hopping on the pre-nup train. We guess this is good advice if it gets to you before you tie the knot.

  • Don't Take Life Too Seriously

You are the center of your world. But 1,300,000 earths can fit in the sun, and about 1,000,000,000,000,000 earths can fit inside one of the largest stars in the universe, Betelgeuse. In other words, we are only a fleck of dust… don’t get wrapped up in sorrow, worry or pain. Live your life, enjoy every moment.
