It’s now an obligation to sing your favorite Katy Perry song on June 8.
And you’re probably wondering, “why?”
Well, Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom announced June 8 as “Katy Perry Day.”
This announcement came during an exclusive June 8 ceremony at AYU Dayclub that honored the singer, who currently has a residency at Resorts World Las Vegas.
Along with Perry’s proclamation, Segerblom also gave Perry a key to the county.
“Clark County has been through a terrible time as everybody has the last couple of years,” Segerblom said. “And truthfully when you (Perry) came back with your energy, your enthusiasm, your beauty, everything, you brought Las Vegas back to life.”
After receiving the key and a proclamation to her very own day, the singer told stories about her roots and connections with Las Vegas.
“My aunt was a showgirl here, my grandma was a seamstress here, my dad grew up here. He ended up being a chauffeur here. My parents met here, they got married here,” Perry said during the ceremony.
“So it’s only natural that I would be on the stage here, eventually. But I did not know or think I would be getting a key to the Strip, which I hope unlocks some better HVAC,” the “Waking Up In Vegas” singer said.
In fact, Perry’s grandmother and aunt worked at the old Stardust Resort and Casino. Her current residency home, Resorts World, sits at the spot where the Stardust once stood, according to Clark County’s Facebook.
“While one of the top stars in music, the Commissioner recognized Katy’s philanthropic efforts which include work to ensure children’s rights to health, education and equality,” the county said on Facebook. “Katy is also a big supporter of LGBTQ equality.”
