You’re locked in a room with your best friends, family or significant other. You’ve never seen it before, you can’t get out, and there’s a clock that’s ticking. What do you do?
Well, if you’re like many that love a good challenge, you’re asking to go something like this. “Escape Rooms” have become the date night of choice over the last decade, but their history goes much further than that.
While it isn’t official, chances are the first example of an escape room premiered on British television back in 1990. “The Crystal Maze” involved a group of contestants taking on challenges in separate rooms. Some mental. Some physical. The show was a major success, even spurring an American spin off.
Back in 2003 the first “modern” escape room premiered at a convention in Indianapolis. “True Dungeon” had many of the elements you expect from an escape room today. Mental and physical challenges solved by teamwork that will help you exit the room (or rooms) within the time allotted. By the start of the next decade, escape rooms were beginning to dot the entire country and the world.
Here in Las Vegas there are a bunch of escape rooms. Some in casinos, some in random strip malls. While they can be a lot of fun, it can be tough trying to figure out which to go to.
