Variety alerted the media yesterday that there is a pitch going on with Tarantino and J.J. Abrams to work on a 'Star Trek' movie together at Paramount and is listing Tarantino as the director, and Abrams as the producer.
Though Tarantino is a HUGE fan of 'Star Trek,' the motif that goes along with the franchise, let alone anything sci-fi, it doesn't seem like his wheelhouse, and currently Paramount doesn't want to comment on the news.
Weighing both sides offers this question: Can Tarantino break from his pop-volatile, spaghetti western style to execute something that should be hues of blue and lens flared out, rather than full of reds, rapid-fire quirky movements, and the occasional dance sequence? He noted in a podcast in 2015 for Nerdist that he would most likely want to pull from an existing episode from the TV show, and adapting it, according to Collider, and shared one of his ideas:
“I do think, what could be done, rather than just hokey space stories … You could take some of the great, classic Star Trek episodes and easily expand them into 90 minutes or more, and really do some amazing, amazing stuff. The obvious one would be “City on the Edge of Forever.”
Though that may be more workable than having the current cast mold into a Tarantino flick, to be honest.
The concern on the other side of the spectrum is the key to being a director is to stick to your strongest points, while being able to be flexible in telling the story you wish to tell. But considering the fact that Quentin has never directed something in this genre, let alone something with this amount of, shall we say, sterile setup, it's hard to know how exactly this would come out, or if it would be so kitchy, that it would place a black mark on the 'Star Trek' franchise.
Currently, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Tarantino is working on an untitled Charles Manson-themed biopic, which seems a lot more like his style, and has noted that he plans on retiring after his 10th film, which would presumably be this 'Star Trek' film if things go to plan.
