Hoover Dam

LAKE MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA, NEVADA – JUNE 15: A view shows Lake Mead behind the Hoover Dam, the Hoover Powerplant below and the Colorado River from the Nevada side of the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge on June 15, 2021 in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Nevada. Last week, The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation reported that Lake Mead, North America’s largest artificial reservoir, dropped to 1,071.53 feet above sea level, the lowest it’s been since being filled in 1937 after the construction of the Hoover Dam. The declining water levels are a result of a nearly continuous drought for the past two decades coupled with increased water demands in the Southwestern United States. The drought has left a white “bathtub ring” of mineral deposits left by higher water levels on the rocks around the lake. (Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images)

DAMN! EXPLOSION AT HOOVER DAM

A transformer went poof at Hoover Dam yesterday in what looked incredibly dramatic and dangerous, but thankfully didn't hurt the power grid or any employees. The blaze was able to be put out pretty quickly and the power kept on being generated without fail. Dam tours were canceled for the day though... damn.

ACMs SAY TTYL TO LV

The Academy Of Country Music Awards are cashing out of Las Vegas. Johnny Kats at the RJ is reporting that the awards show will be moving to the Dallas Cowboy's 12,000 seat practice facility next May. Earlier this year, the show was held at Allegiant Stadium for the first (and it appears only) time. The show, normally on broadcast TV, was seen exclusively on Amazon Prime this year and will continue to be next year. We would write a really sad country song about how she took our dog, our truck and our awards show, but we have like 20 other awards shows, so we'll be just fine.

YOUR PROPERTY TAX BILL IS IN THE MAIL... AND IT MIGHT BE WRONG

We told you a while back about the issues at the Clark County Assessor's Office incorrectly listing single-family, owner occupied homes as something different and instead of capping taxes at 3%, having those properties subject to a higher 8% cap. There was a mad dash by homeowners to correct the issue by the June 30th deadline and the influx of changes was huge. This past weekend, the Assessor's office sent out tax bills and... if you changed your property tax cap right before the deadline, chances are that mail doesn't reflect that change. They said don't worry, they are going through the backlog. If you don't get a corrected bill in the mail by October, call the office. Imagine, they'd be able to drop our taxes a little bit if they didn't send out incorrect forms. But, hey, what do we know.

YOUR NEW POOL HAS A SIZE LIMIT

The size of new pools in Clark County is about to get a cap. Clark County Commission unanimously voted to green light a Las Vegas Valley Water District change that will cap all new pools at 600 square feet. That’d allow you to build a 40 foot by 15 foot pool. Designs with pool covers would potentially be exempt, and designs over the 600 square foot barrier would have to pay a fee upwards of $50 per square foot. The new rule goes into effect for permits granted after September 1st.
